Event Background
Primary brain cancer is one of the most devastating cancer diagnosis a person can receive because of the aggressive nature of the disease and low survivor rates. While the 62% of people diagnosed with cancer can expect to survive for at least 5 years[1] after their cancer diagnosis, only 20%-30% of those diagnosed with primary brain cancer can expect the same result, with most typically given 6 months to 3 years at most. Moreover because tumours of primary brain cancers stay in the brain the impacts of the disease often results in significant loss of motor and cognitive function and severely reduced quality of life for those impacted by the disease. For Grade III and Grade IV brain cancers there is currently no cure.
But there is hope….
Although a severe diagnosis, brain cancer treatments have advanced quickly in the last decade. 10 years ago survivor rates for people with primary brain cancer were a mere 3 – 6 months but thanks to research advancements, partly done in Alberta, survivor rates have increased to 1 – 3 years. While prevention and screening can help improve survivor rates in other cancers, new treatments are the only hope for those diagnosed with brain cancer; Treatments which can only be created through research. Research which needs funding to continue.
Brain cancer research done here in Alberta 10 years ago, resulted in treatment which has enabled my almost 30 months of survival. That’s 4 times the amount of time with loved ones I would not have had if this research not occurred. Nevertheless based on current statistics, with a 36 month maximum average life expectancy my time is running out. Tom Baker Cancer Centre is currently a world leader in neuro-oncology, conducting several research projects which I know I have already benefitted from and am confident will produce the next brain cancer breakthrough and ensure I have many more months ahead of me.
Please join me in supporting the important advancements of brain cancer research on Thursday November 24th
